About This Object

Obverse: Cross pattee with rope-border rim, green enamel infill on all four arms. Central medallion with crossed rifles over a laurel wreath and target. Silk ribbon in white and dark green vertical stripes, tied in a bow with pin-back suspension. Weight: 20g with ribbon.

Reverse: Three-line donor inscription: "Gestiftet von Uhren-Schmidt / Hameln, Osterstr. 32 / gegenuber DEWEZER". The medal was donated by a watchmaker named Schmidt, whose shop was at Osterstrasse 32 in Hameln, directly opposite the offices of the Deister- und Weserzeitung (DeWeZet), the local newspaper still publishing today. The top arm is engraved with the competition result: "4. Sch / freih. / 40 Rg" meaning 4th place, freehand (standing) position, 40 rings (points). The bottom arm carries the 835 silver purity mark and the maker's stamp "AUGUST SCHMIDTT".
