<h2>Vintage GDR 1969 Commemorative Medallion - 20th Anniversary of the German Democratic Republic</h2>
<p>A copper-bronze commemorative medallion issued in 1969 to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of the German Democratic Republic (GDR/East Germany). The medallion was a state presentation piece awarded to recognise the builders, architects and labourers who constructed the new city centre of East Berlin during the 1960s socialist reconstruction programme.</p>
<h3>Obverse</h3>
<p>The front bears the national emblem of the GDR - a hammer and compass encircled by a wreath of rye - alongside the inscription <strong>"ZUM 20. JAHRESTAG DER DEUTSCHEN DEMOKRATISCHEN REPUBLIK"</strong> and the dedication <strong>"DEN ERBAUERN DES STADT-ZENTRUMS VON BERLIN"</strong> (To the Builders of the City Centre of Berlin).</p>
<h3>Reverse</h3>
<p>The reverse features a stylised relief panorama of East Berlin's cityscape, dominated by the Fernsehturm (TV Tower) with its distinctive spherical observation deck, surrounded by modernist Plattenbau high-rise blocks and a socialist star banner - symbols of the GDR's ambitious urban renewal programme centred on Alexanderplatz.</p>

<p>The medallion is in very good original condition with a warm, uncleaned copper patina. The relief detail remains crisp and well-defined. Original black presentation case with velvet cradle and satin-lined lid is included. Please examine all photos carefully for condition details.</p>
<h3>Historical Context</h3>
<p>The GDR was founded on 7 October 1949. By 1969, East Berlin's city centre had been radically transformed under the socialist modernisation programme. The Fernsehturm, completed that same year, became the defining landmark of the new Alexanderplatz. This medallion was a state-issued presentation piece - not a general circulation coin - struck by VEB Munze der DDR Berlin.</p>
