Matched Pair Antique Carriage / Coach Oil Lamps – c.1890–1910

Attractive matched pair of antique carriage or coach side lamps, probably dating from around the turn of the 20th century.

Each lamp has a substantial black-painted metal body with curved upper section, large carrying loop and long tubular mounting stem.

The hinged front doors are fitted with thick bevelled clear glass, while smaller circular red signal or tell-tale lenses are incorporated into the bodies.

Importantly, both lamps retain their removable brass oil reservoirs and wick burner assemblies internally.

The combination of bevelled forward glass, red signal lenses, oil illumination and long mounting stems is characteristic of carriage and coach side lamps of the late Victorian and Edwardian period.

Similar lamps were also used on some very early motor vehicles, and carriage and early automobile lamp designs can overlap considerably. No maker, patent marking or vehicle association has been identified on this pair, so they are being described conservatively as carriage / coach lamps rather than attributed to a specific vehicle.

No railway company marking has been identified and the lamps are not being represented as railway-issued.

A particularly appealing surviving matched pair retaining plenty of original aged character, suitable for carriage, transport, motoring, lighting and industrial collections or display.

Condition:

There is paint loss, chipping, scratching, rubbing, surface corrosion, tarnishing and general weathering consistent with their age and original working use.

Both brass oil reservoirs and wick burner assemblies remain present.

The lamps have not been fuelled or function tested and are being sold as antique collectable/display items. Cleaning, servicing or restoration would be required before any attempt at use.
