British badge collecting crosses several fields at once: militaria, political and labour history, scouting, transport, motoring, coronation memorabilia, jewellery and commercial advertising. That breadth is part of the attraction, but it is also why identification goes wrong. A brass badge with two rear loops is not automatically First World War; a slider does not automatically mean post-war; and a J. R. Gaunt mark proves a maker, not a precise date.

The most reliable method is cumulative. Identify the badge type, examine its construction and enamel, record every reverse fitting and maker's mark, compare the design with dated examples, then consider wear and provenance. No single feature should carry the whole attribution.

What Counts as a Collectible Badge?

In British collecting, "badge" covers objects with very different purposes. Military cap badges identify a regiment or corps. Collar badges and shoulder titles form part of uniform insignia. Membership badges show affiliation to a union, club, motoring organisation or society. Political badges express support for a party, campaign or strike. Souvenir badges commemorate exhibitions, coronations, jubilees and seaside visits. Company badges and works passes identify employees. Modern enamel pins may be purely decorative.

The original function affects both construction and value. A military badge may have been designed to survive hard service and repeated polishing, while a small celluloid political button was intended for a short campaign. Condition should therefore be judged in context rather than against an unrealistic standard of perfection.

Military Cap Badges: Start with the Design, Not the Fitting

British Army cap badges are among the most collected forms of insignia. Designs often incorporate regimental symbols, battle honours, crowns, mottos and monarch's cyphers. Those features can narrow the period, but they require care. A regiment might retain the same basic badge for decades, while a crown changes with the sovereign or a later restrike copies an earlier design.

Other-ranks badges commonly occur in brass, gilding metal, white metal or bi-metal construction. Officers' versions may differ materially and structurally. During the Second World War, economy badges in moulded plastic were issued for a number of units; genuine examples are a recognised category rather than "cheap reproductions".

Polishing is another complication. Service-worn brass badges may be polished smooth, removing detail that would otherwise help identification. Conversely, untouched dark patina is not proof of age: reproductions can be artificially toned.

Loops, sliders and blades: the important correction

Reverse fittings are useful evidence, but popular internet rules exaggerate their dating power. Two loops or lugs with a split pin are found across long periods. Sliders are also found on genuine British badges well before and after the Second World War. Officer's service-dress badges frequently use blades. These fittings overlap, and different dress orders or ranks could use different constructions at the same time.

A British cap-badge slider is normally a vertical metal blade or strip fixed to the rear and pushed down behind the cap band. It is not a horizontal bar through which a separate pin slides. Auction catalogues of documented British badges routinely describe both sliders and loops in collections spanning King's- and Queen's-crown periods, which is why reverse fitting should be combined with the die, material, maker and exact regiment.

How to Distinguish WWI, WWII and Post-war Military Badges

There is no universal checklist that dates every British badge, but a disciplined sequence works well.

  1. Identify the unit and exact design. Establish when the regiment or corps existed and whether it changed title.
  2. Check the crown or cypher. A King's Crown and Queen's Crown narrow the monarchic period, but old patterns may be restruck.
  3. Study the die. Compare feather details, lettering, voiding, scroll shape and badge outline with recognised originals.
  4. Inspect material and construction. Brass, white metal, bi-metal, bronze, plastic and anodised aluminium belong to different specifications.
  5. Record the maker and fitting. Treat them as corroborative evidence.
  6. Look for genuine wear. Wear should make physical sense around high points, edges and fixing points.

Do not use metal colour as a shortcut. The claim that brass lugs are "pre-1914" while white-metal lugs are "post-1914" is unreliable. Both badge bodies and fittings vary by pattern, supplier, rank and repair history.

British Badge Makers

J. R. Gaunt & Son

J. R. Gaunt is one of the most useful names a collector can recognise. Science Museum Group records the company as established in Birmingham in 1884 by James Richard Gaunt and his son Charles Frederick, both formerly connected with Firmin & Sons. It incorporated in 1899, opened London offices in 1905 and eventually became part of the Firmin group in 1991.

That history immediately corrects another common misconception: a stamp reading "J. R. GAUNT LONDON" does not necessarily mean the object was physically manufactured in London, and the changing address style is not a precise year code without further evidence. Gaunt supplied military, civic, transport, society and commercial badges, so the maker's name is an attribution clue, not a guarantee of military issue.

Firmin & Sons

Firmin has a much longer history in military buttons and uniform accoutrements and employed both Gaunts before they established their own firm. Firmin marks occur on buttons, cap badges, shoulder titles and officers' insignia across different periods. Again, exact wording and construction should be matched against the object rather than converted into an unsupported one-line dating formula.

Fattorini

Thomas Fattorini and related Fattorini businesses are especially important for enamelled badges, civic insignia, medals, sports awards and organisational pieces. Birmingham was central to the British badge and button trade, so a Birmingham address on an enamel badge is entirely consistent with a major manufacturing centre rather than evidence of a modern souvenir.

Enamel: Cloisonné, Champlevé and Modern Soft Enamel

"Enamel badge" describes a finish, not one manufacturing method. Correctly identifying the structure is useful for both dating and quality assessment.

Cloisonné traditionally creates separate cells using thin metal partitions or wires, with enamel filling the cells. In strict decorative-arts terminology this differs from champlevé, where recesses are cut, cast or stamped into a metal body and filled with enamel. Many mass-produced British badges marketed casually as "cloisonné" are better described as die-struck or champlevé-type vitreous-enamel work.

Vitreous enamel is glass-based material fired onto metal. It can produce a hard, glossy surface and was widely used on quality 20th-century badges. Soft enamel on modern pins generally uses coloured resin or enamel-like material in recessed areas; the colour surface often sits below the raised metal borders. Modern hard-enamel pins can be polished flat and visually mimic older vitreous work, so finish alone cannot date a badge.

Political, Trade-union and Campaign Badges

British social-history badges can be more difficult to research than military insignia because many were produced locally in small runs. Miners' strike support badges, anti-apartheid pins, CND badges, union branch issues and election material may have no formal catalogue. Context therefore becomes vital: exact wording, printer or maker, local branch name and known campaign dates.

The 1984–85 miners' strike is a good example. Some support badges were issued by individual lodges, women's support groups and regional campaigns in limited numbers. A generic later reproduction of a strike slogan should not be valued like a documented period issue.

Condition expectations also differ. Light wear on a campaign badge may be entirely appropriate; replacement pin backs and repainted enamel still need disclosure. If provenance links a badge to a named activist, workplace or strike committee, preserve that information separately from the object.

Coronation and Royal Commemorative Badges

Two dates recur throughout 20th-century British souvenir badges: 12 May 1937, the coronation of George VI, and 2 June 1953, the coronation of Elizabeth II. Millions of commemorative objects were made for both events, so age alone does not make a coronation badge rare.

Value rises with unusual local issues, named schools or organisations, quality enamel, scarce makers, original backing cards and exceptional condition. Common pressed-tin portrait badges can still be attractive pieces of social history but are generally inexpensive.

Scout and Guide Badges

Scouting badges combine uniform insignia with achievement systems. Early association badges, local district issues, jamboree badges and discontinued proficiency designs can all be collectible. Cloth badges require different dating methods from metal membership badges: embroidery style, backing, wording and official programme changes are more useful than metal fittings.

Do not assume every fleur-de-lis is a Boy Scout badge. The symbol is widespread. Identification should include lettering, national organisation, material and original method of wear.

How to Spot Reproduction Military Badges

Reproduction is not always fraudulent. Re-enactors, collectors and military outfitters have bought restruck badges for decades. The problem begins when a later restrike is represented as an original period issue.

  • Compare the die: tiny differences in lettering, feathers, voids and scrolls can reveal a copy.
  • Inspect the back: modern solder, casting texture and artificially blackened metal are warnings when inconsistent with the known pattern.
  • Check thickness and edge finishing: cast copies often lack the crisp sheared edge of a die-struck badge.
  • Do not trust a maker mark alone: marks can be copied, and genuine firms also produced later restrikes.
  • Watch for invented combinations: a convincing badge body with the wrong fitting can still be assembled.
  • Use specialist references for expensive examples: a £200 badge deserves more than visual similarity to an eBay listing.

Recent UK sales illustrate the range. Common genuine Gaunt-marked military badges can sell in the single figures or teens, while better officer-quality, precious-metal and unusual organisational examples may reach tens or hundreds. That spread is why a blanket "Gaunt badge value" or "Fattorini badge value" is meaningless without the exact organisation, material, pattern and condition.

UK sold-market check — reviewed 29 August 2026: a Unite trade-union badge sold for £4.37 in June and a Jack Dash dock-workers enamel badge for £9.19. Sterling-silver Scout "With Thanks" badges sold at about £24–£25. A J. R. Gaunt-marked Royal Lincolnshire Regiment officer's sterling-silver forage-cap badge sold for £34.99 in July, while a scarcer Fattorini Guild of Air Pilots and Navigators enamel badge reached £102.88 in August. These are completed examples, not authentication evidence or fixed price bands: the seller's attribution still has to be checked independently.

Care, Storage and Display

Badges are compact but vulnerable to poor storage. Vitreous enamel chips when knocked against neighbouring metal. Brass and copper alloys can develop active corrosion in damp conditions. Silver tarnishes. Paper backing cards and ribbons fade in sunlight.

  • Store individual badges so metal edges cannot rub together.
  • Use inert archival materials rather than soft PVC sleeves.
  • Keep humidity moderate and stable.
  • Avoid aggressive metal polish: it removes plating, detail and historic surface.
  • Do not bend old loops repeatedly to test them.
  • Record provenance and any known replacement parts.

For display, fabric-lined frames work well if the badge is supported by its existing fitting rather than glued down. Never permanently bond an original badge to a board for presentation.
