Vintage German Federal Cross of Merit - Bundesverdienstkreuz am Bande

An original Verdienstkreuz am Bande (Cross of Merit on Ribbon) from the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstorden der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). This is Germany's highest civilian honour, established on 7 September 1951 by the first Federal President, Theodor Heuss. The order is awarded by the Federal President for outstanding contributions to the nation.

The Decoration
A cross pattee with four tapered arms in deep red enamel, edged in gold-coloured metal. The central medallion bears the German Federal Eagle (Bundesadler) in black against a gold ground. The cross is suspended from a ribbon in the German national colours of black, red, and gold.

The Case
Original dark presentation case with blue velvet cradle and satin-lined lid embossed with the Federal Eagle. A small ribbon tab is fitted beside the cross for lifting.

Circa: Post-1951 (Federal Republic of Germany)

Condition
The cross is in excellent original condition with intact enamel and crisp detail on the eagle medallion. The ribbon shows light storage wear. The presentation case is clean and structurally sound with minor scuffing to the exterior. Please examine all photos carefully for condition details.

Historical Context
The Order of Merit was created in 1951 as the only general federal decoration of the Federal Republic. The "am Bande" class is the lowest of eight grades and is awarded for significant contributions to public life, culture, science, or civil society. Since the 1990s, annual awards have declined from over 4,000 to fewer than 1,000, making these increasingly uncommon on the collector market.

Packed carefully and dispatched same day from the UK.

Explore more vintage militaria, commemorative medals and historical collectibles in our store, The Voyage Bird.
