Vintage French Medal of Honour for Labour, Commerce and Industry — Marseille Mint

An original silver-grade Médaille d'Honneur du Ministère du Commerce et de l'Industrie, struck at the Marseille mint. Established by decree on 16 July 1886, this medal rewarded long and faithful service by employees and workers in French commerce and industry. It is one of the oldest civilian decorations of the French Republic.

Obverse: Left-facing profile of Marianne, the allegorical personification of the French Republic, wearing a Phrygian (liberty) cap. A rectangular cartouche above bears the inscription "MARSEILLE", identifying the mint or regional authority of issue.

Reverse: Three standing figures — two workers flanking a central draped female figure — set against an industrial backdrop of factory buildings and smokestacks, representing French commerce and industry.

Ribbon: Vertically split grey-blue and red ribbon with button fastener. This ribbon pattern identifies the pre-1948 issue of the medal.

Circa: 1886–1948 (French Third Republic).

Condition: Very good original condition with a warm, uncleaned silver patina and light surface wear consistent with age. The relief detail on both sides remains crisp. The ribbon shows light fraying at the edges and the button fastener is intact. Please examine all photos carefully for condition details.

Historical context: The Medal of Honour for Commerce and Industry was created in 1886 during the early years of the French Third Republic. It was awarded in bronze (30 years service) and silver (40 years service) grades, making the silver class the senior award. The medal was later absorbed into the broader Médaille d'Honneur du Travail system in 1948. The Marseille cartouche on this example reflects the city's importance as a major Mediterranean commercial and industrial centre.
