Large Chinese Carved Stone Dragon Seal / Chop – Scholar's Object

An impressive Chinese carved stone seal or chop, surmounted by an extensively carved traditional dragon.

The substantial square seal body has a translucent honey-yellow appearance, contrasting with the darker reddish-brown carving above. The dragon is modelled in the round, with its long scaled body curling through the composition and detailed carving to the head, limbs and surrounding forms.

The sides of the seal block are additionally engraved with decorative motifs and Chinese characters.

The underside carries a large deeply carved seal-script matrix, identifying the piece as a traditional Chinese seal or chop rather than simply a decorative carving.

Seals have played an important role in Chinese culture for centuries, being used as personal and official signatures and in association with calligraphy, painting and scholar's objects. Dragons and other auspicious creatures were also frequently used as decorative seal finials.

Stone Identification:

The exact stone type has not been established.

Its colour and appearance are broadly consistent with materials traditionally used for Chinese seal carving, but it has not been positively identified as Shoushan, Tianhuang or any other specific stone and no such attribution is being made.

The inscriptions and seal matrix have not yet been translated.

Condition:

There is some minor wear around the intricately carved extremities. Please inspect all photographs carefully, particularly the dragon carving, edges and seal face, as they form an important part of the condition description.
