Antique 1920s–1930s Brocade Evening / Dance Purse with Ornate Floral Frame

Beautiful antique evening or dance purse dating from approximately the 1920s–1930s.

The bag has a richly patterned gold-coloured metallic brocade body, gathered beneath an exceptionally decorative gilt-coloured metal frame.

The pierced frame is worked with scrolling floral decoration, including blue flowers and green leaves, together with numerous small red, blue, white and yellow coloured stone or paste-style accents. The kiss clasp is particularly attractive, with green cabochon-style terminals.

A long linked metal chain provides the carrying handle, while the interior retains its cream-coloured fabric lining with gathered storage pockets to the sides and decorative braid around the frame.

The combination of metallic brocade, elaborate frame and compact evening-bag construction is characteristic of formal accessories produced during the interwar period. No maker's mark or country of manufacture has been identified.

Condition:

There is rubbing, discolouration and tarnishing to the metalwork, together with wear and fading to the metallic brocade and general marks consistent with age. The interior lining also shows age-related marks and wear.
