Historical Background:

The MP4 gas mask was introduced in the 1970s, modeled after the US M17 gas mask but with distinctive Polish modifications. Early prototypes featured dark rubber and black fittings, but production models transitioned to olive green rubber and eventually grey rubber by the 1980s.

This mask served the Polish People’s Army during the later stages of the Cold War. Despite its introduction, earlier masks like the SzM-41M were still widely used until the MP4 saw broader deployment in the 1980s. It remained in service until being replaced by the MP5.

The MP4 is an unlicensed clone of the American M17 gas mask, sharing much of its functionality while incorporating subtle design changes. These include wider-spaced lenses for improved vision, silver-colored components, and an overall rugged build. Known for its durability, the MP4 was a critical tool in Poland’s military preparedness during an era defined by the global arms race.

This complete set, with all its original accessories and factory-sealed components, is a nice find for collectors and historians alike. It offers a tangible connection to the Cold War and Poland’s military history.
