Antique Chinese Canton Famille Rose Export Porcelain Plate

Antique Chinese Canton export porcelain plate decorated in colourful famille rose enamels over a pale celadon-green ground.

The densely detailed decoration features a bird in flight surrounded by butterflies, flowering plants, fruiting branches and scrolling foliage. The design is finely painted in shades of pink, green, blue, yellow, orange and black, enhanced with gilt highlights and finished with a narrow gilt rim.

The reverse has a matching pale celadon glaze and bears an underglaze blue square seal-style mark within the foot ring.

Condition: Fair antique condition. There is a noticeable chip or area of loss to the rim, together with smaller rim nibbles, surface scratches, rubbing, enamel wear, gilt loss, minor staining and general age-related marks. A short line is visible beneath the base and may be either a firing line or a hairline. Please study all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.

Circa: Believed to date from the 19th century. The age and exact meaning of the underglaze mark have not been independently authenticated.
